October 7 Commemoration and Memorial Service

Monday, October 7, 2024 5 Tishrei 5785

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Create and “plant” 101 anemones/kalanit - one for each hostage remaining in Gaza - and stay for a memorial service. The flowers will become part of the ongoing “Bring Them Home” chairs installation in front of the temple.

4:00-5:30pm: Create and plant flowers
5:30-6:00pm: Memorial service

We are planning to be outside the entire time, barring inclement weather.

Why Anemones?

Anemones, Israel’s national flower, cover the country at the end of the winter. After October 7, when the sadness and pain became too difficult to put into words, artists across Israel began to express themselves through the anemone, a natural expression for three reasons:

  • It shows honor/kavod to the way Israelis express their remembrance of this most recent war as well as previous wars.
  • The Jewish concept of remembrance/zikaron combines prayer with action.
  • The beauty of these flowers, which burst forth at the end of winter and the beginning of spring, symbolizes hope/tikvah.

All are welcome. Join us just to make flowers, just for the service, or both.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
