Reflections from the Teen Civil Rights Seminar

What are three things you learned on this trip or through the Civil Rights seminar?

The role of ordinary people in shaping history: the Civil Rights movement was not led by any one person or organization, but was the result of countless acts of bravery and determination by ordinary people.

-Yael Sommer

What was one thing you did on the trip that made you think deeper about civil rights?

Walking through the Legacy Museum changed my life. The personal stories and the horrifying pictures and memorials were very impactful.

-Hadley Lewensohn

When we walked across the Edmund Pettus bridge, I thought about what we had learned about the violence people had inflicted upon them on Bloody Sunday. And the true weight of being able to safely walk across that bridge is something I will carry with me forever. That feeling gives me a responsibility to treat every person with respect and as an equal, no matter what they identify as and no matter the color of their skin.

-Syd Fretzin

What was one message you heard on the trip that you think is still true today?

Even if you aren’t directly affected by a problem, it affects someone you know.

-Jackie Silverman

To stick up for what you believe in and to treat people the way they want to be treated!

-Natalie Weiner

Keep fighting for what is right
