Rooted in tradition and responsive to the present, our rabbis and cantors guide Am Shalom with wisdom, warmth, and vision

Alyssa Latala

Chief Experience Officer

Alyssa Latala is Am Shalom’s Chief Experience Officer, part of the synagogue’s Executive Team. She manages Am Shalom’s various communication platforms, serves as a first point of contact for prospective and new members as they begin their Am Shalom journey, and facilitates some of Am Shalom’s adult experiences and volunteer opportunities. Before coming to Am Shalom, Alyssa was a program director for Big Tent Judaism, an independent, trans-denominational Jewish outreach organization. She’s also worked for two non-profit consulting firms, a small family foundation and the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago. When she’s not at the temple, Alyssa’s favorite role is mom to her boys, Ben and Sam. She loves musical theater, reading, cooking and long walks with her 105 pound doggo, Marty McFly.

01

What’s your favorite Am Shalom tradition?

I love Tashlich at Glencoe Beach! After months of preparation for the High Holy Days and the hubbub of Rosh HaShanah, we gather for just a few more moments of quiet reflection at the lake. It’s so uplifting – the perfect way to end the day.

02

What brings you Jewish joy?

When my son asks me to make kugel, and I get to take out the recipe card written by my grandma. Sharing holidays with family and friends, and passing traditions on to my children. Saying “And they’re Jewish!” whenever I hear about a Jewish person who’s done something fabulous.

03

What’s your favorite Jewish food?

Lox and chive cheese on a sesame bagel that’s toasted until it’s practically burned

When did you decide your role in Jewish communal service was the right path for you?

I was working for a nonprofit consulting firm when the opportunity came up to go to Israel. After 10 days there, I quit my job and started a new path in Jewish communal service.
